Coppola carried that can-do/look-at-me bravado over to his first post-Godfather II project: Apocalypse Now. Zoetrope stalwarts Lucas, John Milius, and Carroll Ballard had all been involved with the film as proposed writers and/or directors at various points—each excited by the idea of adapting Joseph Conrad’s psychological adventure novel Heart Of Darkness into a guerrilla Vietnam War movie. But by the mid-’70s, Lucas was making Star Wars, Milius had become a studio hand, and American Zoetrope was foundering, so Coppola claimed Apocalypse Now for himself and headed to the Philippines to shoot it with a big cast and big effects, looking to make a semi-improvised art film on a blockbuster budget, and maybe re-spark the imagination of his whole co-opted generation.
Dixon focused on materiality for his print, which translates a super high-resolution photo of metal foil onto the soft hide, resulting in a hypnotic, trompe l’oeil effect (the designer also created versions with photographs of materials like hair and rock). At right, Natasha Baradan plays with contrasts, printing intricate lace onto the leather, offsetting its thick, organic hand.
The second is FibroVin consists of plates ranging in thickness from 0.6 to 1.4 mm (0.02 to 0.05 inch) made of 60 percent rigid SolVin PVC and 40 percent long-glass fibers (5 to 10 cm long). The production process is a combination of two technologies that were codeveloped with Fibroline (Lyon, France): dispersion of PVC dry blend into the cut glass fibers via electrostatic field (Fibroline); and gelation of the PVC dry blend without shearing (SolVin). The claimed advantages include excellent flame-resistance, high rigidity with high impact strength, good thermoformability, UV-resistance and the ability to be glued and welded. Target applications include electrical boxes; sandwich panel faceskins in transportation; partition walls; gypsum boards and other marine and building construction products; and reinforcements for profiles, plates and pipes. (See Fig. 7.)
"We work with many SMART members in the wiping chapter who primarily sell rags," Bloovman explains. "These relationships help augment our customers’ businesses, enabling them to compete with larger companies by creating different types of wipers.
Since One From The Heart, Coppola’s idea of a personal film has been so wrapped up in the aesthetics of stage and screen that it can seem like the contrary—he’s a filmmaker, after all, so it stands to reason that his passions are embedded in artifice. Though touted as Coppola’s first original screenplay since The Conversation, 2009’s Tetro references the many tributaries of his family history, but its story of estranged brothers and Oedipal strife are as old as the theater itself, and their creative rivalry lends the film another distancing layer of meta sheen. It’s the product of a great dreamer and aesthete, rather than an authentic emotional experience—a gorgeous, crystalline bauble that really catches the light. Shot mostly in luminous black and white, Tetro doesn’t have Youth Without Youth’s philosophical ambition, but it’s the most wholly satisfying of his recent spate of indie projects. Coppola may not be invested in the operatic drama he whips up, but he’s keenly interested in the whipping-up part, and that’s enough.
VOC content in the intermediate coat is just 6g/liter, with active anti-corrosive pigments and strong resistance to water. The topcoat combines good water and weather resistance with high gloss retention, freedom from yellowing and VOC content of 90g/liter.
Airtech International (Huntington Beach, Calif.) brought several new products: Securlon V-45 is an economical vacuum bagging film suitable for phenolic resins; it is used for commercial autoclave processing, and has a maximum use temperature of 171°C/340°F. Thermalimide E is a high-performance bagging film for cure temperatures up to 426°C/799°F. Thermalimide E RBCS, a film that is treated on both sides with a release coating, can be used for cure cycles up to 405°C/761°F. Flashbreaker PS1 is a high-temperature/high-tensile strength polyester film that is coated with a high-tack, pressure-sensitive silicone adhesive for oven cures up to 204°C/399°F. Wrightlease 2 is a new extruded fluoropolymer pressure-sensitive tape with a silicone adhesive. Toolwright 5 is a thicker version of the same extruded fluoropolymer film, and it is also coated with silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive. Finally, the Airtech Vacuum Test Unit is used to test the vacuum integrity of all Airtech vacuum hoses and valves and the quick disconnect couplings that are attached to them.
To better assess that difference, one needs only to look at the place they both assign to the painter. Where the Support/Surface artist Marc Devade, for example, brought a heavy psychoanalytical bend to his writing and placed the painter in crisis squarely in the center of any painting practice, Bonnefoi did not dwell on the importance of the painter and did his best to evacuate volition as much as possible from his method. He identified the art object as the apparatus/locus where painter and viewer converged, and where a new experience was reconstructed, rather than simply as a cultural product, as Support/Surface did.
One of the first aspects of Bonnefoi’s work to strike the viewer is his use of scrim-like material, such as tarlatan gauze — an open-mesh fabric often used by house painters to repair cracks in walls — or the more recent German-made Trevira fabric, instead of the usual opaque cotton canvas or linen.
Diversified jute products are becoming more and more valuable to the consumer today. Among these are espadrilles, floor coverings, home textiles, high performance technical textiles, Geotextiles, composites, and more. Jute bags are used for making fashion bags & promotional bags. The ecofriendly nature of jute make it ideal for corporate gifting.
As painting and its practice became more and more of interest for philosophers, it would not be long before philosophical discourse would spill over into art criticism and art practices: the philosopher turning into a painter (or vice versa), and this is the step that Bonnefoi and Dunoyer undertook with Janapa.
It was a drawing by futurist Syd Mead, featuring what looked like a white garbage truck, walking through the snow on four insect-like appendages. Johnston expanded on the design, making the walkers seven stories tall, giving them a “head” with turrets, and a blockier body and gray paint job that matched the Empire’s Brutalist architectural look. The ILM workers called them only “the walkers”; the formal name AT-AT (All Terrain Armored Transport) was adopted by Lucasfilm merchandising long after the sequence was completed.
