Vötsch Industrietechnik (Reiskirchen-Lindenstruth, Germany) introduced what is said to be the world’s largest industrial microwave curing system, with a working chamber volume between 750 liters and 7,000 liters (26.5 ft3 and 247.2 ft3). The VHM Hephaistos system is reportedly the first successful development of microwave technology on a large-scale, mature industrial engineering level. The company says that with this system it is possible to quickly cure carbon fiber composite parts and structures for automotive and other applications. The Hephaistos system requires no additional pressure and involves only inertia-free heating of the component itself — the oven is no longer actively heated. The system thus generates heat at the fast rate associated with microwaves but with low energy consumption. According to Vötsch, the Hephaistos oven offers very short cycles compared to heating carbon fiber composites in conventional autoclave ovens (4 to 5 hours vs. 10 to 15 hours) and uses 30 to 35 percent less energy. (see Fig. 10.)
But that would be a common theme on the set, where Lucas took chances and nurtured talent. Tippett remembers 21-year-old Mike Pangrazio showing up “out of the blue,” and freehand painting the flawless matte backdrop for the frozen planet that appears in the film.
For shipping, the mast is separated into two pieces. The rudder and keel are easily removed, and the boat’s cradle has been designed to tilt roughly 80° for stowage, with all components, on a 40-ft flat rack container.
Cintas Corporation has announced its collaboration with JW Marriott, part of Marriott International, Inc., which will debut a new collection of wardrobe essentials across 51 of the brand’s hotels worldwide. In addition to the new collection launch, JW Marriott properties in the U.S. will participate in a unique garment-recycling program managed by Cintas that responsibly reuses the brand’s retired uniform line.
CRC also maintains a small shop located in Sandy, OR, US, that does its CNC work and 3-D imaging. When asked why he doesn’t bring the CNC machine up to Tacoma, Graf simply replies, “The operator is more important than the machine.”
With this acquisition, worth £44 million, Veranneman Technical Textiles, a division of Sioen Industries, aims to reinforce its position in the market of the reinforcement textiles and complete its product range. The new configuration can offer a full range of woven, laid and laminate scrims and fabrics.
Frankly, it’s hard to argue that One From The Heart deserved a better fate. In all his tinkering with the look of the film, Coppola failed to pay enough attention to the script or the performances, leaving some very good actors to flounder their way through banal, under-written conversations in a story that goes nowhere. But just because the movie may have deserved to fail doesn’t mean it’s not worth seeing. The idea of placing largely non-glamorous people in a glamorous milieu is a good one, and translates to some poignant moments as the Tom Waits/Crystal Gayle songs on the soundtrack play forlornly against everyday scenes of arguing and sex. And Coppola’s staging is frequently awe-inspiring, as he uses neon lighting and scrims to make the ordinary appear magical, and to forge connections between the characters. If Coppola had made this movie as cheaply and quickly as he’d intended, he might’ve preserved all that’s special about One From The Heart without carrying around the bloat, or the stink of catastrophe.
The biggest puppets were the size of a greyhound puppy. Ray Harryhausen, at the time almost 60 years old and the most experienced living stop-motion animator, was reportedly approached to bring them to life.
Jute is the second most important vegetable fibre after cotton; not only for cultivation, but also for various uses. Jute is used chiefly to make cloth for wrapping bales of raw cotton, and to make sacks and coarse cloth. The fibres are also woven into curtains, chair coverings, carpets, area rugs, hessian cloth, and backing for linoleum. Traditionally jute was used in traditional textile machineries as textile fibres having cellulose (vegetable fibre content) and lignin (wood fibre content).
Lastly, while Coppola has largely steered clear of the for-a-lark music-video and TV episode assignments that so many other directors of his generation have taken on, he did helm the “Rip Van Winkle” installment of his pal Shelley Duvall’s Faerie Tale Theater, and he directed the 3D theme park short Captain EO for Michael Jackson, which seemed to be his way of showing George Lucas (who co-wrote the script) how terrible a Star Wars movie could be if he really tried.
Adjacent to the fabrication shop is a controlled-environment booth for trimming and sanding. “It’s actually a paint booth without fixed walls on it,” explains Graf. “We can control the temperature, and it has fresh air coming down continually. The fresh air being forced down from the ceiling pushes all the dust and dirt to the pits in the floor for removal. Only in operations like grinding, when dust is being kicked up at the operator, are masks required.” Once parts are trimmed and sanded and pinholes have been repaired, the parts are moved next door to the adhesive area where panels are glued together.
It took 18 months to figure out how to handle polyester fibres, these micro-thin filaments of polyester, in the 3Di process. Polyester is stretchier, which is a benefit as it makes the sail tough and more forgiving, but when you pull it though a machine to make the filament spread tapes, that needs tension so it wants to recoil when the tension is relaxed. Making the tapes was the hard part.
